Macquarie University is a public research university based in Sydney, Australia, in the suburb of Macquarie Park.
Macquarie University opened its doors to the community for the first time on 6 March 1967 and the number of applicants exceeded expectations. The Australian Universities Council allows 510 valid full-time students (EFTS), but Macquarie University has 622 full-time students out of 956. From 1968 to 1969, Macquarie’s enrollment increased dramatically, with the school gradually adding 1200 full-time students and more than 100 faculty members. In 1969, the Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM) was established.
Macquarie grew rapidly in the seventies and eighties, including the development of courses offered by the school, student numbers and campus construction. In 1972, the university established Sydney’s third law school, the Macquarie School of Law. In their book Freedom of Opportunity, published by Macquarie University, Brussmansfield and Mark Hutchinson describe the founding of Macquarie University as “an act of faith and great experimentation”. Another subject considered in this book is the reform movement of the late 1970s, which recommended the establishment of the science degree, thereby facilitating the subsequent inclusion of designated degrees other than the traditional Bachelor of Arts.
Established in 1964, the university is committed to becoming Australia’s leading research university, with the aim of becoming one of the eight leading research universities in Australia and one of the top 200 in the world by the time of the university’s 50th anniversary in 2014. According to 2012 statistics, the university has about 37,000 students, among which about 7,910 overseas students come from 71 different countries, and 2,221 faculty members, 65% of whom hold doctoral degrees, higher than the national average. The landscaped campus covers 126 hectares and is a 30-minute drive from Sydney Harbour to the north-west. The campus is adjacent to Macquarie Centre, one of Sydney’s largest shopping malls, and not far from the office buildings of Microsoft, Cisco, Compaq, Honeywell, Oracle, SONY and other famous multinational companies.
Macquarie University aims to become a world-renowned university without borders. It attaches great importance to the development of students’ global adaptability and strives to cultivate international talents for the 21st century. Macquarie University has been recognized by the Organization for International Economic Co-operation and Development as a best practice in internationalizing its curriculum. The University offers over 100 travel scholarships to encourage students to participate in student exchange programs with partner institutions overseas.
